Heidi Machnee, RN, RM

It was in a Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Bangladesh that midwifery first took root in Heidi’s heart. Witnessing the plight of these mothers and their infants was a driving force behind her decision to pursue midwifery. In 2006, she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor of nursing, after which she practiced for 12 years in paediatrics and paediatric oncology. Nursing afforded her numerous skills and immeasurable experiences serving children and families through the joys and sorrows that come with such work. She was able to take her skills abroad, working in Haiti, Niger, and Bangladesh which impressed upon her, even further, the need for skilled care providers, especially in the realm of maternal-child health.

Heidi was accepted into the UBC midwifery program in 2014.  There she encountered the richness and joy that comes from supporting birthing persons through their pregnancy and birth experiences. Heidi  works diligently to ensure that the care she provides allows birthing persons to feel safe, informed and empowered. Her background and values align clearly with those of midwifery work- a desire for deep and trusting relationships, choice for birthing persons and families, home birth for those who choose it, evidence based practice, and the opportunity for life-long learning. She considers it an utmost privilege to be invited into this intimate space in people’s lives.
